You can’t call Teufelsberg a real abandoned adventure anymore with all the artists living in the buildings and tours you can follow but that doesn’t mean it’s less awesome to visit!
Teufelsberg is a big hill in West Berlin, you can easily recognize the big globes from all across the city, located on different buildings. The hill thanks its height to the rubble, originated from the second world war.
At the end of the fifties the American secret service build a listening or intelligence-gathering station on top of the Teufelsberg, hence the big white globes. After the wall came down, most of the machines to gather intel have been removed and ever since there were a lot of different plans to make use of the mountain, think of hotels or apartments, a museum on top of the hill etcetera. Thank heavens nothing came of those ideas and Teufelsberg is still, to date, worth a visit.
You can easily call Teufelsberg a creative incubator, loads of different artists have their spaces up in the old station to create amazing street art. I can only beg you to please pay Teufelsberg a visit if you ever get to Berlin, it’s really worth your time!
