If you, like me, can’t wait to go away next spring with the winter coming, think of an awesome trip to Budapest. The city is beautiful during each season, during spring it gets fresh and green, summers are warm and sunny and autumns in the city are beautiful orange. Below nine of my favorite places in Budapest!
1. Dinner at Café Kör
Number one is a dinner at Café Kör. This resaurant alone is enough reason for me to go back to the city. It might be a bit expensive for Budapest but the food is amazing and will be the best you’ll ever eat during your trip. Don’t forget to make a reservation because it is quite small and busy in the evenings.
Not really something to do if it’s 30+ degrees Celsius in August – take the hop-on-hop-off bus for your own sake – but once you’ve reached the top the view of the city is amazing! On top of the mountain you’ll also find the Citadel and the statue of Liberty, good time for a visit.
3. Shoes on the Danube Bank
The Shoes on the Danube Bank honors the Jews who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during World War II. They were ordered to take off their shoes, and were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away.
The monument is 40 meters long and quite impressive. You’ll just walk by if you haven’t got a clue what has happened but it really gives me goosebumps time and time again.
The Budapest city park is very nice for a small walk. On Saturday- and Sunday-mornings there is a huge fleamarket in the middle of the park (Zichy Mihály út 14 Flea Market) until two o’clock. You can find the beautiful statue of the Anonymous Writer in front of the Vajdahunyad Castle. And if you have some luck next to the castle you’ll see a small stall selling flammkuchen (thin pizzas with sour cream, onion and bacon) those are to die for!
Budapest equals ruin pubs. The city holds over twenty ruin pubs spread all over town and they all have something unique and one is more awesome than the other. Please visit Szimpla Kert, A’nkert and Instant to begin with!
Drank too much during your pub-crawl? Budapest has a solution: homemade lemonade you can buy at almost each café or bar. It’s the best lemonade you’ll ever think, almost a cocktail without the alcohol.
Budapest has several spa’s. Széchenyi Thermal Bath is the most well-known and perfect to visit after a busy day of sightseeing.
8. Burritos at Ellátó Kert
Incredibly tasty, cheap burritos in a colorful beer garden where they also serve some fine cocktails.
9. Budapest Zoo
Hearts for Budapest Zoo. Always. Why? A sloths residence you can walk through, a beautiful home for the elephants, a butterfly garden, camels you can feed and everything in a cozy, small zoo. Have an afternoon off? Certainly pay this zoo a visit!
A secret number 10
And of course another must-do is Sziget. If you can visit Budapest during Sziget, do so! Stay in an apartment or hostel during the festival and visit Sziget for two or three days, afterwards you can easily sleep in a nice and cosy bed and visit the city during the day.
